Ein Termin beim Bürgeramt, An Appointment at the Citizens’ Office

  1. 1Deutsch

Seit drei Wochen wohnt Elif in Leipzig.

    English

Elif has been living in Leipzig for three weeks. She found a flat quickly, but one important step is still missing: registering at the citizens’ office. Without a registration certificate she cannot open a bank account, and she will only receive her tax identification number afterwards. So on Monday morning she tries to arrange an appointment online.

  2. 2Deutsch

    English

The next available appointment is not for another four weeks. Elif is a little annoyed, but she stays calm and puts the date in her calendar straight away. In the evening she reads carefully which documents she has to bring: her passport, the confirmation of residence from her landlady, and the registration form. She prints the form out that same evening and fills it in at her own pace.

  3. 3Deutsch

    English

On the day of the appointment she is there twenty minutes early. The member of staff at the counter speaks very quickly, so Elif politely asks her to speak a little more slowly. That is no trouble at all. Elif answers a few questions about her address, signs the form and receives the registration certificate the same day.

  4. 4Deutsch

    English

Afterwards she thinks that the appointment was much easier than expected. What helped most was the preparation: she had looked the important words up beforehand and therefore knew what she wanted to say. She will go about her next visit to a public office in exactly the same way. She also wants to try to conduct the whole conversation in German, without switching into English.
