Today’s German Practice

C110–12 minutesLanguage & Belonging

Read the German first and let the unfamiliar words sit for a moment. Reach for the English only when a sentence will not come together. You will get more out of a second slow pass than a first perfect one.

Die Sprache, in der man dazugehört, The Language You Belong In

  1. 1Deutsch

    English

At many internationally staffed companies English has long counted as the working language, and for understandable reasons: it lowers the barrier to entry, speeds up the filling of open positions, and spares everyone involved the effort of communicating in a language only part of the workforce commands confidently.

  2. 2Deutsch

    English

The calculation only works out, however, as long as one considers the workplace in isolation. For language does not stop at the office door. Someone who works in English for years may find one day that they can speak about quarterly figures with complete assurance, yet fall silent at their daughter's parents' evening. Today's professional convenience becomes, by this route, tomorrow's social distance.

  3. 3Deutsch

Entscheidungen fallen selten ausschließlich in Besprechungen.

    English

There is also a subtler effect, one people are reluctant to discuss. Decisions are rarely taken in meetings alone. They take shape in the minutes before and after, in the corridor, over coffee — and there, as a rule, German is spoken. Anyone who cannot follow those conversations learns of decisions instead of taking part in them, and may wrongly attribute their own marginal position to their own performance.

  4. 4Deutsch

    English

None of this amounts to a case against English, but it does amount to one against the assumption that the language question is settled once a corporate language has been fixed. An employer who wants to attract skilled workers from abroad will not be able to spare them German, but will have to make it possible for them: during working hours rather than at the edges of them, and early enough that learning does not feel like an admission of failure.
