Homeoffice oder Büro?, Working from Home, or at the Office?

  1. 1Deutsch

    English

Since the pandemic, working from home has become part of everyday life at many companies. What began as a stopgap has turned into a firm expectation: an employer who advertises a position today and insists on being in the office full-time must expect qualified applicants to drop out before an interview even happens.

  2. 2Deutsch

    English

The arguments in favour are obvious. Employees save time and travel costs, can work with more concentration and organise their day more flexibly. Studies also suggest that satisfaction rises as soon as people are allowed to decide for themselves where they work. For parents and for those caring for relatives in particular, that freedom is often the very thing that makes full-time work possible at all.

  3. 3Deutsch

    English

On the other hand, it cannot be overlooked that something is lost. The incidental exchange by the kettle, the quick question to the next desk, the shared laugh over a draft that went wrong — none of that is easily reproduced in a video call. New colleagues report strikingly often that they feel like strangers for months when working from home, because they are missing precisely those chance encounters out of which trust grows.

  4. 4Deutsch

    English

Most companies have therefore settled on a hybrid model. Whether it genuinely combines the best of both worlds or merely unites the drawbacks of each depends less on the number of office days, however, than on whether those days are used for anything. A day in the office on which everyone sits in silence at their own screen is little more than an expensive commute.
